Encounter with Mystery
The spiritual journey can be a place for encounter with mystery. Our journeys may lead us to places we never imagined we would walk. Unexpected twists can shift the trajectory of our paths.
Whether we grew up in a Christian or other religious tradition (or not):
- The emergence of new questions can disrupt old habits and beliefs
- Crisis or grief can lead to trauma and feelings of distance from God or others
- Experiences of sacred beauty or love may stir up longings for deeper meaning
If our paths are also our spiritual journeys, we can become open to encounter the mysteries they contain.
What hopes, dreams, desires, or longings are stirring in us?
What fears, sorrows, wounds, or anger do we carry?
What messages do these movements of our hearts and bodies communicate to us?
How is God–or Spirit, Creator, Love–speaking to us through our stories? How is God present within them?
What Is Spiritual Direction?
Spiritual Direction as Sacred Space
A centuries-old tradition, spiritual direction is a sacred space to talk and reflect about the spiritual journey. Similar to psychotherapy, a Directee meets one-on-one with a Director who listens deeply and compassionately to their personal sharing.
Contemplative Presence
We trust that God is already present and moving as the true spiritual guide. By listening deeply, we hope to notice these spiritual movements and to reflect on them together.
Safety and Trust
It is essential to feel safe to freely explore spiritual experience without judgement. In spiritual direction, compassion, warmth, and acceptance provide the foundation for trust, while ethical guidelines for spiritual directors uphold safe practice.
About
Krista Bowman has long been fascinated by God and the spiritual life, passions that have led her to stretch beyond her Evangelical Mennonite roots to explore contemplative prayer, Ignatian spirituality, and work that supports justice for marginalized people. Eager to study theology, Krista completed an M.A. in Ministry and Spirituality with a Diploma in Spiritual Direction at Regis College, the Jesuit theological school at the University of Toronto, in 2024.
Krista believes in deep listening that honours the authentic self. She hopes that in her work with Directees, they will experience the warmth and kindness they need for the vulnerable and courageous work of spiritual growth.
Krista’s desire is that individuals might find meaning, experience healing of inner wounds, and discover new horizons for spirituality and prayer that draw them closer to the heart of Love.
